What was your first job role at Schoolcomms? And today?
I started as and still am a Software Tester. As Schoolcomms are constantly developing and growing there’s always something new for me to get my hands on. No two days are ever the same.
How long have you worked at Schoolcomms?
I’ve worked at Schoolcomms for just over 18 months now.
What made you apply for a job at Schoolcomms?
As a parent, I had used School Gateway, so I had an understanding of the product. I liked the idea of working with a company who offered a service which would be used by and benefit many. The Schoolcomms company ethos is also extremely family friendly which is a massive bonus.
Describe your first week at Schoolcomms
In my first week, I met with the teams who were all very welcoming and friendly. I worked with colleagues from the Test, Product and Development teams to gain product knowledge which enabled me to get up to speed. All the departments work together really closely to make sure everyone is aiming for the same end goal.
What’s it like working in Worthing?
The office is in a great location, central to shops and only a short walk to the seafront so when the weather is sunny we can make the most of it by popping down the beach after work.
What would a normal working day look like for you?
I work closely with the Product team and Developers in delivering and testing maintenance fixes as well as new functionality, but every day is different. Depending on where we are in the development stage of a product I may be testing wireframes or carrying our exploratory testing and continuous maintenance on existing products.
What training and development opportunities have you been able to take advantage of since being at Schoolcomms?
We have an hour a week allocated for learning, where we are encouraged to learn and share our findings.
Since joining Schoolcomms I have learnt about and become a JIRA administrator, setting up and migrating our bug tracking system as well as becoming an office First aider.
What has most surprised you about your role at Schoolcomms?
I’ve really enjoyed the variety within the role, in managing side projects alongside testing and how valued every member of the team is.
Any advice for someone wanting to join your team?
If you are keen to learn and share your findings there is plenty of opportunity and a great work life balance.
In your opinion, what makes Schoolcomms a unique place to work?
Everyone’s voice is heard and there is plenty of opportunity to develop and learn along with the Schoolcomms Mission and Values which evidences our commitment to the high level of service we provide.
Is there anything that you’re particularly proud of that you’ve achieved since being at Schoolcomms?
Being part of the successful delivery of many releases, including a new payment feature, Paypoint, where I was Project Test Lead. Simply knowing how respected Schoolcomms is in our marketplace is also a huge source of pride.
Perks of the job?
Regular social events which are always so much fun! They’ve included laser tag, go-karting, cocktail making and a comedy evening. Plus, a yearly visit to Bude in the summer to spend time with the rest of the team.
